How to become a copyist and earn $ 3,000 per month

Today I have a special interview with a woman who has been working from home for more than 35 years as a scopist.
Not only that, but she also opened a school called the Internet Scoping School, teaching others how to do what she does best, outreach.
She has been very successful and some of her students now earn between $ 3,000 and $ 4,500 per month.
So who is this amazing scopist?
Her name is Linda Evenson, a professional expert and owner of Internet Scoping School.
Internet Scoping School is a highly reputable school recommended by the US National Court Reporters Association.
Reaching is a rare profession that not many people know about, but it is in high demand and can earn you a lot of money from the comfort of your home.
Let’s go straight to the interview and find out what a scopist is and who should become one.

What is a copyist?
The scope is the editing of documents for court reporters. These can range from statements to public hearings and court proceedings, even the winners’ speeches at the Academy Awards!
The reporter types the spoken words on a shorthand machine that translates the shorthand into English by matching the strokes with the words the reporter has entered in his dictionary.
Words that the journalist does not spell perfectly or that are not yet in the dictionary will appear in shorthand.
Copyists read files word for word, punctuate, paragraph, decrypt mistranslated / untranslated stenographic notes (known as note reading), research spelling, and make the file as perfect as possible.
The file is then normally reviewed by a professional proofreader or reporter before it reaches the attorneys.

How can you become a copyist and can someone begin to determine the scope? If not, what is required in terms of training and equipment?
People who love language tend to have an affinity for reach. People who enjoy reading and crossword / word games, learning new words, who are good at writing, and have a good vocabulary are signs of someone who tends to shine in scope.
People who love learning new things and challenging themselves to do the best job possible will love the opportunities that outreach provides.
In addition to word skills, scopists need to know how to punctuate and paragraph, read automatic shorthand, run court reporting software efficiently, research the Internet, and put together a transcript correctly.
People who can motivate themselves to spend long hours in front of a computer, who can relate professionally with clients, are responsible and punctual, and provide the consistent service and quality that journalists hope will excel as scopists.

If a new scopist started today, how much should she expect to earn from Scopist Jobs?
It takes time to develop speed and clientele, so earnings vary widely. A new scopist might want to start slowly and only work with a reporter for a while to get into the groove.
A newbie can work a couple days a week and generate around $ 1,000 per month, then gradually add clients and speed up to where he works almost full time.
Scopists are paid per page, so a newer scopist can only edit 20 pages per hour, where an experienced scopist working with a talented reporter can probably edit twice as much.
Once the scopist is experienced and can handle the pressure, you may want to enter the fast-paced market. Some scoping jobs are due in three days or less, some even the same day they are taken, and the page rate is significantly higher.

Can outreach jobs be full-time or only part-time?
The nice thing about scoping is that it is very flexible. Some people just want additional income to supplement their income.
Others want to go full blast and do everything they can. Depending on the quality of the writer, the speed and sharpness of the scopist, and the deadline that the job is due, a scopist can earn anywhere from a dollar a page to double or more.
These scoping jobs are high pressure and demanding, and usually don’t happen very often. When they do, a scopist can earn several hundred dollars a day.

The internet is full of court reporter / escort websites. These are wonderful places to interact with reporters, be friendly, contribute to conversations, and show off your word skills and work ethic.
There are also job boards where reporters post “ads” looking for scopists and vice versa. Being involved with state and national court reporter associations demonstrates an interest in the profession that journalists respect.
Word of mouth recommendations from satisfied customers are the best references of all.
I know you have been in the industry for over 35 years. How did you become a scopist? How has your scoping experience been?
I heard that an acquaintance was working from home, writing for the court reporters, so I called her and asked for more information. Then my search led me to find a note-reading correspondence course, and I started writing from actual reporters’ notes.
Soon after, I started working at a local court reporting firm shortly after they got their first computer. It was a mainframe computer that was as big as a desk and used large pizza-sized disks that were about 250 pages long.
They cost 100-150K and rattled like locomotives as they translated the files and could only be used for court reports. But it was a match made in cyber heaven!
Fast forward from those days to my laptop which is many thousands of pages long and can do everything a desktop can do and costs around $ 500!
Add the availability of high-speed internet and enter the world of today’s scopist. I can work for anyone anywhere in the world, and I can find the spelling of a doctor’s name in Kalamazoo as easily as if I lived there. Reach has really come a long way, baby! My experience in scoping has been incredible! I’ve always been good at English and consequently horrible at math, so the scope is perfect for me. I love sitting in front of my computer every day and working on files.
I have worked from home for most of my career and have contributed many thousands of dollars to our family while having been able to spend more time with my family. I work with some incredibly talented reporters, and after all these years, I still love what I do. It is a difficult act to overcome!

I understand that you offer Scopist training. Please tell us more about Internet Scoping School.
I have been running Internet Scoping School for 19 years and have really enjoyed it. Having been a scopist for so long, it was a challenge trying to remember everything I had to learn on my own because there were no scopist training courses in those days.
I racked my head to encompass all the skills and knowledge a scopist needs to do a great, professional job and be successful. Why take someone’s money and train them if I can’t give them everything they need to make money as a scopist?
There is a free 7-day email series that gives a short overview of scope so that people can get an idea of what scope is and if they might be interested in it as a career.
This is followed by an introductory section called “Basics of Outreach” that provides a more detailed look at the profession and contains some instructions on using words. Https://1eeee64b51aeeb5179832e8cb2ccede7.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-37/ html / container.html
The following sections are: Scoring and Word Use for Scopes; Reading notes; Medical terminology; Production of transcripts; Case CATalyst training (software for reporters); Reporter Files where students can practice scoping and then compare their work to an edited file; then “The Successful Professional Scopist” contains a glossary, ethics, ergonomics, basic tax information, outreach tips, marketing, and lots of other information that didn’t fit anywhere else.
It has been very gratifying for me to see ISS graduates go out and succeed and keep their clients happy and earn good reputations.
It shows that the methodology I envisioned when I started this company works. The scope has been very good for me and I really love it. What a pleasure to be able to share that with others!
Do you have any success stories or testimonials that you can share with aspiring scopists from the students who have taken the course?
There are several testimonials about ISS on our website:
Cindy is a graduate who specializes in high-end daily copies and earns more than she and her husband used to earn together;
Robin is the mother of an autistic son who loves the freedom that the scope of her life gives her to spend time with him while bringing home thousands of dollars a year without having to leave home;
Darice was laid off from her job and became a busy scopist who never has to worry about layoffs again. These interviews and others can be read by scrolling down the page at Scope School.

As we come to a close, what tips or suggestions for success would you give to those just starting out?
Don’t be in a rush to complete the training. Learning the material well will take you much further than trying to rush in and not being ready to do a good job for your reporters. Bad reputations circulate faster than good ones.
Be willing to work hard and go the extra mile for your clients. They are in a high pressure, often overworked career and will appreciate your excellent and prompt services. Don’t just be a scopist; Be a supporter of reporters!
Always strive for excellence. There is no substitute for striving to do your best job.
Know your craft well and offer help to reporters and other scopists. You will gain a great reputation and increase your value to customers exponentially.
Enjoy working from home and never forget to count your blessings! Copyists truly have the best of both worlds!
